Households are being encouraged to maintain their recycling efforts in the new year starting with their Christmas trees.

Collection dates in the new year week are one day later with things returning to normal from January 8.

If residents are unsure what days to put their bins out, they can check collection calendars supplied with the new bins, the latest issue of the Aylesbury Vale Times or the Aylesbury Vale District Council website.

Councillor Sir Beville Stanier, cabinet member for environment and health, said: “We’d like to thank residents for their efforts throughout the year and encourage them to recycle as much of their Christmas waste as possible, again this year.

“Our new recycling service makes it so easy to recycle almost all the extra waste over the festive period, and every bit of waste residents sort into their recycling or outdoor food bins will help us move closer to a 50 per cent recycling rate by 2014.”

Residents signed up to the council’s garden waste service can put real Christmas trees, wreaths or holly and mistletoe in the brown garden waste bin. Trees should be cut into small pieces before putting in the brown bin.

Alternatively, trees can be taken to household waste and recycling centres in Aston Clinton, Aylesbury and Buckingham. A wide range of other materials including household electrical items, domestic batteries and used cooking oil can also be recycled at these sites.
