Drink driving has led to 86 people being injured in car crashes across Buckinghamshire so far this year.
Today a transport boss warned that figure was likely to increase over the festive period.
Peter Hardy, the cabinet member for transport at Bucks County Council, said: “Any amount of alcohol affects your ability to drive, so the only safe option is not to drink alcohol if you plan to drive.
“The legal consequences of a drink driving conviction are severe and long lasting.”
The Transport For Bucks Road Safety Team and Thames Valley Police will be carrying out roadside checks over the next few weeks aimed at ‘educating drivers about the dangers of drink driving and the need to maintain their vehicles, especially during winter time’.
During a similar campaign last year, 56 drivers in Buckinghamshire failed a breath test.
Drivers could be fined £30 if their lights are found to be defective.
If they fail a breath test drivers will be arrested and charged – potentially leading to a criminal record, up to 10 years in prison, driving ban or a heavy fine.
Leaflets and posters will be sent to businesses, garages and libraries by the Road Safety Team to remind drivers about the potential consequences.
Pubs and clubs throughout Buckinghamshire have been issued with beer mats, highlighting the dangers of drinking and driving with the heading ‘How much will your next round cost you?’
