Carers can find out if they are entitled to extra funding during an advice clinic being held in Aylesbury on Friday.

Carers Bucks is encouraging people to check they are claiming all the benefits and assistance they are entitled to, including the right to a break.

To mark Carers Rights Day, the charity is holding a drop-in advice clinic between 11am-2pm at its office in Ardenham Court, Oxford Road, Aylesbury.

Carers can get further information on benefits for themselves and the person they care for, advice on energy saving, technology to help with caring and the carers’ breaks scheme.

Chief executive of Carers Bucks, Stephen Archibald, said: “Since the scheme’s launch in June, 440 carers have received a payment of up to £500 available via GP surgeries in Bucks to enable them to have a break.

“The fund is for people who provide unpaid care, to someone who is sick or disabled, vulnerable or frail and could not manage without the carer’s help and whose health or wellbeing is affected by their caring situation.

“It’s important to stress that this funding is not simply for ‘a holiday’ – it is there to facilitate carers having some ‘me time’, whatever form that may take.”

One carer who accessed the carers’ breaks scheme said: “I took a break to rediscover myself in the Scilly Isles and it was truly marvellous for my wellbeing.

“I think carers really need a push to be ‘selfish’ – let’s face it there are not many jobs which are 24/7, 52 weeks a year without any annual leave.”

There are around 6.4 million carers in the UK who save the economy £119 billion per year.
